Amateur Futurology

I'm posting a few older comics that may have previously appeared on more ephemeral social media or in publications unavailable or out of print.
The following piece originally appeared in now defunct Rabble magazine.

Buzz Number 2

Remember Buzz comic no. 1 from last year? I got to work on some comics for the brilliant Buzz number 2 recently. In a project co-ordinated by Oonagh Young and featuring comic makers Fintan Taite, Sarah Bowie and myself we adapted stories from 6th class pupils of St.Agnes Girls and Scoil Colm Boys primary schools in Crumlin, Dublin. The stories revolved around their general lives and their feelings about growing up and progressing on to secondary school.

It was a really fun project and some terrific work resulted - have a look at some samples from Fintan here and Sarah here.

The whole thing is beautifully printed on newsprint in a format similar to Buster and Whizzer and Chips comics and the like from back in the day - the paper even goes all yellow and crispy in the sunlight!

Copies should still be available from the Lab on Foley Street in Dublin or you can send an A4 stamped addressed envelope to: Oonagh Young Gallery, 1 James Joyce Street, Dublin 1, Ireland for a copy

Below are a few of my efforts:

Buzz Launch

Been working on this great project over the last few weeks in association with the Oonagh Young Gallery and the illustrator Fintan Taite. Fintan and myself have been making short comic strips based on the audio recordings of Dublin city kids talking about their lives and what they get up to in the locality.

Oonagh has put it all together into this comic called Buzz -it's being launched in the Oonagh Young Gallery, 1 James Joyce Street, Dublin 1 this Wednesday 21st May at 11am. The exhibition of some of the kids artwork is going to be there for a week as well as some original art and prints from Fintan and myself.

You can get a copy of the comic at the gallery for 3 euro. It's printed on newsprint and is the size of those old IPC comics like Whizzer and Chips and the old 2000ad so it should yellow up all nice. The comic should be available from various outlets around the city thereafter too.

There is an Irish Times piece giving a bit more background on the project here.
The Facebook page for the launch is here.

Wrong Way, Turn Back

Piece that I did for the very natty 'Gods and Monsters' anthology from last year. This appeared reformatted somewhat in the book itself.

Christmas Derek and Damien

I only managed to get a page of this seasonal Derek and Damien story completed before Christmas. Ah well, there's always next year.

The Vision Service

A comic I did as a trailer for this excellent RTE radio play by Luke Clancy called the Vision Service - well worth a listen.

When Hitch met O'Casey

Promotional comic for the excellent Culture File Podcast on when director Hitchcock met Sean O'Casey the Irish playwright. Have a listen here.

I should also add - regular collaborator Liam Geraghty (Gazebo, Littlest Arsonist) did the script duties on this one. You can also be in with a chance of winning the original black and white line art by following and retweeting the Culture File Tweet.

It's A3 sized, black ink on heavy weight 300gsm cartridge paper - make a great Christmas present or self-indulgence!

It's digitally coloured and I did a few colour versions of this, the following of which were slightly brighter ones than the final chosen piece:
